A term paper is a research paper required to be written by students, accounting for a large part of a grade and usually due at the end of the semester. It is a written original work describing an event, a concept, or arguing a point. While you can research on steps to write your own term paper, you can use some extra help with term paper writing by getting ideas that are not usually shared by the experts.
This is not just any other essay you submit within the semester; this is the culmination of all the lessons you have learned for the entire term. So make sure this is made manifest in the paper. Do your research and investigate. Do not just rely on internet sources, but try to visit your school library and look for published materials and journals relevant to the topic. Once you have gathered all the data and information you need, try to synthesize and organize them to create a logical outline of your paper. Start to analyze the data and come up with a thesis statement which you can focus on. Defend this thesis with substantial evidence and arguments that are easy to read and understand. Assume that your readers are not familiar with the topic, which means it is your responsibility to make it easier for them to understand it. Use your findings in a broader context by relating it to historical or general knowledge. Weed out unnecessary results and try to focus only on the central idea you elected. Lastly, conclude and make a stand between two opposing theories or controversial issues. Of course, your evidence and arguments should all point and lead to that conclusion.
As already mentioned, do not just rely on internet sources. Consult general encyclopedias on the topic’s history, issues, and people involved. Take note of the bibliography, since it will lead you to the authors who have published journals and other papers related to the topic. Seek out materials that are not common and are actually hard to find. Some really useful and essential information can be found in essays and short articles but these are usually buried amongst materials that are not typically related to the topic. So be patient and keep looking. Journals are really good sources of information, as well as magazines of general interest and textbooks. If you find it difficult to look for these publications, you can always ask for some assistance from the librarians. They can even give you some inputs and ideas on what to include in your term paper. Of course, you do not have to use all the materials you have gathered. Choose only what is essential and most relevant to the subject matter.
Having a really good substantive content is useless if it is not well-written. Proofread your final draft to rid it off wrong grammar and spelling. See if the tone is consistent all throughout the paper and watch out for sentences that do not sound right, either because it opposes a previous thought or it is grammatically incorrect. Trust your gut and review for any possible error. Avoid using jargons and technical terms, and opt for shorter and simpler words. Be as clear as possible and remember, every finding must be well-substantiated. That is, everything has to have a corresponding fact or evidence for proof. Cite sources for credibility. Additionally, do not forget that this is a formal academic paper so do not use colloquial words or any slang. Also check for redundancies. To avoid being redundant, minimize your use of adverbs, unless absolutely necessary. Try to avoid using adjectives as well, especially since they make things sound too incredible. Again, keep your words as simple as possible. Likewise, metaphors and personifications are not necessary and will only make your paper sound tired. One or two expressions are acceptable, but too much of these will not improve your paper.
While common knowledge need not be cited anymore, you are obligated to cite and refer your readers to your primary sources of information and ideas in order to give them the credit they deserve. Check with your professor and ask which citation style he or she prefers, so you can follow that accordingly. The Chicago Manual of Style is the standard reference for style of scholarly papers, while journals usually adhere to the Los Angeles Times Stylebook. While your professor can require any acceptable style of references, the general rules still apply. First, write a complete paper. Give sufficient information that will allow your readers to locate the source. This includes the name of the author, publisher, publication date, and complete title. Internet citations will differ slightly but the same rules apply – the more information you include, the better.
Do not just edit and proofread your term paper once. For accuracy and consistency, make sure to do it twice or thrice until you feel that it is ripe and ready for submission. In reviewing your paper, make sure that the subject matter or topic has been addressed completely. Make sure that all your supporting statements focus on answering your thesis statement. Delete unnecessary and irrelevant statements. See to it that the structure and organization are done in a way that helps readers understand the paper faster. Do not just use quotes in your paper, discuss and analyze these facts and pieces of evidence accordingly. Again, these facts and pieces of evidence must be properly cited. Follow the format required by the school. If there is none, just make sure it is readable and presentable.
